(Report by BC Cheah from Tali Bowl, Helsinki, Finland)
Defying the odds, our young Malaysian girls caught the audience attention when our team stormed home in the last game to pip arch-rivals and favorites to take the pole position.
Bowling the Team of Four (1st block) event, our young Malaysian girls produced a commendable performance. Starting the first game on Lane 28, Team Malaysia cruised towards a clean game path till the 8th frame when lead role, Siti Safiyah encountered a 8 split opened frame. However, Siti managed to steer home with 202 game, Fatin Syazliana strike-out for a 221 game, Jacqueline Sijore responded with 206 game while anchor-lady, Sin Li Jane suffered a last frame split to end on 196 game for a inspiring 825 total to place 6th.
Our girls team continued their momentum in their second game as each bowler was repeating their shots. A turbulence in the 8th frame resulted in opened frame for all our girls. Siti lost her focus to end her game on 184; Fatin missed a single pin spare to finish on 167; Jacqueline bowled 192 game whilst Li Jane carried the team on her shoulder with 7 consecutive strikes to end on 239 game. Our team's score of 782 and combined total of 1607 managed to hang on 5th position.
In the 3rd game, Siti Sifiyah was all fired up, reeling 3 consecutive strikes, followed by a spare and another 4 consecutive strikes for a remarkable 246 game. Fatin recovered from her blues to storm home for a 217 game; Jacqueline suffered a hiccup to end on 171 game. Sin Li Jane was instrumental as anchor lady as she blazed the lanes with another creditable game of 227 to escalate our team's total to 861 pinfalls. In this tight race, Jane's last frame strike out propelled Team Malaysia to leap-frog over the favorites and took the pole position in this 1st block of 3 games.
An elated anchor-lady, Li Jane was hugged by team-mates, without realising that our team has took over the lead. "I just stayed focussed and repeat the shots on my game; thanks to the good guidance from my coaches, Foong & Azidi and motivational support provided by our psychologist, Peck Ngor' said Li Jane.
The vocal support from our Embassy staff as well as the presence of our H.E. Ambassador watching from behind and cheering our team paid dividends.
The Team Boys' event shall commence at 1:00pm later today.
