SABAH LEG - OPEN AND GRADED RESULTS

The Sabah Leg concluded today with Sabah winning 3 out of 4 gold medals offered in the Open and Graded Category. Mohd Ozzer Othman and Siti Aishajan, both Sabah SUKMA athletes won the Boys and Girls Open category respectively.

Mohd Ozzer, the Boys Team Gold Medalist in the recent SUKMA games went into the Knock-Out Round as 3rd seeded. In the quarter finals, he outplayed his team mate Hazwan Hj. Hasbullah with a total 2 games score of 415 against Hazwan's 317. He then met another of his team mate in the Semi-Finals, Ahmad Faiz Deedat and disposed of him as well. In the finals, he was up against Sunny Lee of Kuching, Sarawak. Sunny was the top seed going into the Knock-out round but there was no stopping Ozzer when he didn't let seeding stand in his way. With this win, he is currently leading the GP Rankings for the Boys Open Category for East Malaysia. Only 3 Boys Open qualify for the GP from East Malaysia.

The Boys Graded category was where Sarawak struck gold. Ervin Lam of Miri, Sarawak, son of Sarawak coach Tony Lim overcame a strong final round opponent from the host state, Muhd Muzammil Zakree. I was not there to witness the final match but I believe that it must've been a tensed match as Ervin edged Muzammil by only 5 pins (333-328).

Photos will be uploaded as soon as I receive them. Meanwhile, you can download the full results of the Sabah Leg in the Download Box on your left.

SABAH LEG - UNDER-12 'STARS OF TOMORROW' RESULTS

Under-12 Boys Participants

Under-12 Girls Participants

The 1st Leg of the East Malaysia edition of the SportExcel Circuit began on June 26th in CPS Bowl, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. It kicked off with the Under-12 "Stars Of Tomorrow" Category where 23 boys and 23 girls from Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan gathered to battle it out for the title "CHAMPION".

Under-12 Boys Winners with Mr. Allan Lee

Under-12 Girls Winners with Mr. Allan Lee

The Under-12 category or better known as "Stars of Tomorrow" was initiated by the Amateur Bowling Association of Sarawak (ABAS) and Sukan Teras in 2006. The "Stars of Tomorrow" has always gotten major support from the officials and especially the parents as they watch their children put into action what they've been taught. This year, the bowlers played a total of 8 games and Ahmad Azraei Tamring from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah won his first title in his bowling career when he amassed a total of 1459, averaging 182.38 beating his team mate, Ahmad Fawwaz Farhan by 100 pins in the boys category. The bronze medal went to Christopher Tiong from Sibu. The girls category also was dominated by Sabah when Steffira Zeandea defended her title in the Sabah edition of the "Stars of Tomorrow" when she knocked down 1350 pinfalls to beat Jacelyn Ng and Nicole Tan from Sarawak, her nearest opponents to the title.

Results of Under-12 Category

Even though the number of participants was less this year, the atmosphere in the bowling center remained upbeat. I always find when the Under-12 bowlers are in action, their parents are more excited and nervous compared to the bowlers. But this is good, it shows that the parents are supportive of their children and this will lead to their children being more disciplined and therefore better persons in the future. The Under-12 "Stars of Tomorrow" competition has produced many potential bowlers for Sabah and Sarawak like Muhd Syafiq Sajeli from Sarawak who represented his state to the SUKMA games and produced the historical PERFECT GAME.

Sabah also had Siti Aishatun Husin who won the 2006 Sarawak "Stars of Tomorrow" competition representing the Sabah Team in the recent SUKMA games. Because of the initiative of ABAS for the Under-12 category, SportExcel proposed that the Under-12 category be inducted into the Junior Circuit this year. Thanks to ABAS and thanks to Sukan Teras, MSN.

The graded and open category will see action tomorrow.

JOHOR LEG - 3RD DAY RESULTS

Boys Graded Leader - Zawir Aiman (PRK)
Girls Open Leader - Nadya Izzati (SEL)
Girls Graded Leader - Norsyazana (PRK)
Boys Open Leader - Kevin Tan (MEL)

Phew....it was a really long day with a 1 hour delay due to lane breakdowns and lane shutoffs but it was satisfying nonetheless.

The day kicked off with the open category playing their 1st round of 8 games. Kevin Tan of Melaka was on FIRE!!! His first game of 258 was already very high but in the 2nd he nearly scored a PERFECT GAME! He had a 9 spare in the first frame and just continued striking till the 10th frame...a score of 290!! From then onwards...he just lead all the way till the 8th game. Later that day, the he returned to the lanes to complete his 2nd round of 6 games and continued to lead eventhough his performance lacked slightly. In second position was Muhd Saman from Pahang. He too maintained his position from Round 1. He will be meeting his team mate, Muhd Hanif in the Knock-Out Round tomorrow.

In the Girls Open Category, Nadya Izzati from Selangor also successfully maintained her lead from Round 1 going into the Knock-Out Round. She will be meeting Nur Diana Hussin from Kuala Lumpur in the Quarter Finals.

It was the same scenario in the Boys Graded where Zawir Aiman managed to also maintain the pole position pipping his team mate Mohd Zafiq Syaddiq by 2 pins.

The Girls Graded category however produced a different story. Norsyazana Rosli who was 3rd in the 1st Round secured the top position with a 196 in her 14th game. Round 1 leader Noramirah from Johor is in 2nd position.

Under-12 Bowlers

Our young future stars, the Under-12 bowlers also played their preliminary round of 6 games. There was a total of 42 bowlers this time around making it the highest number of participants so far in this category. After the 6 games, Siti Nurzulaikha from Kuala Lumpur and Wan Nadzmi Fikri from Selangor emerged leaders. Fikri scored a 236 in his last game making the gap between him and the 2nd bowler a huge 87 pins.

This is the first time Noramirah is taking part in the SportExcel Junior Circuit this year. Sonia Teoh from Melaka is in 2nd place with 1445, only 2 pins behind Noramirah and coming in third is Norsyazana Rosli from Perak.

In the Boys Graded category, Zawir Aiman from Perak took over the top spot from Mohd Farhan Rahman from Johor when he bowled a total of 1591 pin in Squad A. He had a slow start of 160 in the first game but picked up the pace from then onwards. This is Zawir's first time in the top spot. Mohd Zharif Hashim from Selangor is 2nd with 1553 pinfalls.

Results can be obtained from the Download Box on your left.

JOHOR LEG - 1ST DAY RESULTS

Mohd Farhan Rahmat and Noramirah Hashim

After the excitement of the SUKMA XII in Terengganu, the bowlers are now focused on the SportExcel Junior Circuit where all of them are trying their very best to qualify for the Grand Prix Finals.

The 5th Leg of the Peninsular SportExcel Junior Circuit is held in Ampang Superbowl, Leisure Mall, Johor Bharu and began at 4.30pm when 41 Johor Boys and Girls Graded bowlers checked in and played their first round of 8 games.

Mohd Farhan Rahmat and Noramirah Hashim outdid their team mates to come up tops. However, they should not be too comfortable in their lead as tomorrow bowlers from the other states will take to the lanes. But who knows, maybe they will continue leading in their hometown.

SUKMA XII - MASTERS RESULTS

Fahmi and Pui Yee showing off their medals

Wilayah Persekutuan and Johor both earned their 2nd gold medal after defeating 15 other masters finalists in yesterday's masters event. However, their victories came in different situations.

Cheong Pui Yee from Wilayah Persekutuan was in 2nd position going into the position round. She was 38 pins away from Tengku Emanina from Kedah who led from the beginning. In the last game, Ema was feeling very tensed. She just couldn't string the strikes together and in the last frame, she was left with a eight split. She completely missed both pins and ended up with a score of 170. Pui Yee was working on a strike on the 9th frame. She had to double up in order to have a chance to beat Ema and she did. Then, she needed another one to get a better chance to Ema and guess what....she STRIKED! In her last throw of the competition, she needed an 8 pin count to tie with Ema and a 9 to win. Her ball went brooklyn and all 10 pins went down to beat Ema by a mere 2 pins. The crowd cheered, Pui Yee's tears rolled down and she was hugged by all her teammates. First and last gold medal for Cheong Pui Yee of Wilayah Persekutuan in SUKMA XII.

Fahmi being hoisted by his team mates

Fahmi on the other hand had a HUGE lead going into the position round. He was leading by 150 pins from Tg. Ariff of Kedah and 157 pins from Rodson Tong of Pahang. He was already the clear winner. It was now a fight for the silver and bronze medal. Rodson eventually bowled a better game than Ariff and was awarded the silver medal. This is also Fahmi's first and last gold medal of the competition. Earlier, he and his Johor team mates won the silver medal in the Boys Team Event.

Mohd Syafiq Sajeli and Tuan Haji Jamaluddin

There was a special award presentation after the masters medal presentation. The Terengganu Tenpin Bowling Association decided to give Mohd Syafiq Sajeli a token of Recognition and Congratulations for his historic Perfect Game feat in the Boys Team Event.

This concludes the SUKMA XII 2008 Terengganu. This year's overall champion goes to SELANGOR with a total of 3 golds and 2 silvers.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL WINNERS!!! This has been a very successful event and the medals were very well distributed.

The Perfect Boy
Mohd Syafiq Sajeli of Sarawak

It was more exciting in the Boys Team event when Sabah took an early lead with a first game score of 832. In the second game, the attention was on Sarawak when Mohd Syafiq Sajeli rolled down his 1st perfect game of his career. His perfect game is also the first perfect game in the history of the SUKMA and will remain a record that would never be erased. For your information, Mohd Syafiq will turn 13 years old on June 13.

PAHANG STRIKES GOLD!!!!! Nobody expected the trios of Farah Izzazaya, Jerusha Chan and Tunku Haifaa would come out tops after the first block of 3 games and to maintain the lead and win the gold medal.....FANTASTIC!!! Credit must be given to Farah @ Yaya for being the heroin of the day. As Mr. Choo puts it "She won for Pahang tonight". Farah bowled a 6 game total of 1290 to erase Sharon Chai of Johor's score of 1288 set in the 2000 SUKMA. The three of them also recorded a new 6 game trios record of 3623 erasing the old record of 3573 set in 2000 by Christine Ong, Mak Choong Yee and Vivien Khoo in the 2000 SUKMA. On top of that, they also set a new 1 game trios record of 678 erasing the old record of 662 set during the 2002 SUKMA by Elaine Lam, Sharifah Arifah and Yazliza Razlan.

Selangor settled for the silver with Ili Syazana, Siti Nur Harini and Dina Nurnadia trying to catch up but the gold medalists were just to far away with a lead of 93 pins going into the last game.

Wilayah Persekutuan's trios of Cheong Pui Yee, Hee Kar Yen and Radin Nur Najwa inched their way to the Bronze Medal with a good pin count of 597 in the last game.

SUKMA XII - BOYS SINGLES RESULTS

The day went to Yusof Abdul Raof from Wilayah Persekutuan. He beat 57 other bowlers to earn the title Boys Singles Gold Medalist of the 12th SUKMA, Terengganu here in Diman Bowl. Yusof bowled in the morning squad and he rolled down scores of 224, 210, 231, 193, 168 and a massive 245 to lead Squad A of the Boys Singles.

He waited in the bowling center to watched the bowlers in Squad B bowled. His position as the leader was unstable up to the last game. Fahmi Bahri from Johor and Mohd Afiq Esa from Melaka were keeping pace with his score but in the last game, they fumbled and in the end the Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal went to the bowlers in Squad A. Yusof won the Gold Medal, Khoo Beng Khai from Penang with the Silver Medal and Clement Loh the Bronze.

CONGRATULATIONS to YUSOF!!! After the completion of the singles events, looks like the non-favorites are showing off their stripes. Keep it up!

SUKMA XII - GIRLS SINGLES RESULTS

The 1st day of competition for the 12th edition of SUKMA kicked off this morning with the Girls Singles. There were 2 squads of Girls Singles and the GOLD MEDAL winner went to Noor Amirah from Kedah! This is her first appearence in the SUKMA Games and this gold medal will definitely be an unforgetable moment.

Noor Amirah or Mira as she is known to everyone bowled in the morning squad and was on FIRE! She had a 265 in her first game and from that moment onwards, she never looked back. She had to score a 199 in her last game for her to beat the SUKMA record of 6 games held by Sharon Chai in 2000 but maybe her nerves got to her and she made a few mistakes. However, in squad B nobody came close to beating her. So....CONGRATULATIONS MIRA!!! Syaidatul Afifah of Perak won the silver medal and Tengku Emanina from Kedah won the bronze.
