SELANGOR LEG - 3RD DAY RESULTS

February 17, 2008 marks the day that SportExcel Tenpin Bowling Junior Circuit kicked start the new format of the KNOCK-OUT ROUND, replacing the ROUND ROBIN and STEPLADDER format.

Today was definitely a day of upsets and surprises. The day started out with the Boys Open and Graded category, followed by the Girls Open and Graded in the afternoon.

The Boys Open Champion was Mohd Amirul Afif from Kuala Lumpur who had to upstaged Mohd Faliqh Shah of Selangor, Abdul Muhaimin of Perak and finally Muhd Fazrin also from Perak in the finals whom he beat by only 1 pin. Muhd Fazrin had to strike on his last frame to force Afif to a 1 throw decider. When his ball only hit 9 pins, Fazrin was frustrated, but on the other hand, Afif was overjoyed.

In the Girls Open category, it was a battle between best friends; Nor Amilia and Ili Syazana of Selangor. Before the match, I was chatting with Ili and she said to me that luckily this was bowling, if it was boxing, she would have given up the game then throw punches at her best friend. In the end, Nor Amilia took both games, 193 to 144 and 194 to 161 and was of course crowned Champion.

Quiet Muhd Mizan of Johor won the Boys Graded category, beating Mohd Zharif of Selangor. Even with the home crowd cheering his opponent, this did not interfere with Mizan's concentration in his game. He beat Zharif 208 to 175 and 175 to 154.

It was a fairytale ending for Nur Shahira of Kuala Lumpur in the Girls Graded category. She entered the Knock-out Round seeded 8th and ended up beating all her opponents to win her 1st title of her career. A good start to a new year for her!

I guess this format gives more oppotunities to the lower seeded to move up the ranks and even win a leg....!

Giving away the prizes were Bowling Queen, Ms. Shalin Zulkifli and STBA President, Dato' Mohd Aini.

SELANGOR LEG - 2ND DAY RESULTS

Mohd Aziem Azemi

Today was the "PERFECT" day for Mohd Aziem Azemi. During the Boys Open and Girls Open 1st round in the morning, there were already 2 announcements made by YK Choo, "This is a special announcement, Mohd Aziem Azemi, bowling on lane X and X has 7 consecutive strikes!". These 2 announcements however, did no justice to Aziem's when both 8th frame throws was not a strike. Many blamed it on YK Choo's annoucement. No offense Uncle Choo.

but...

in Round 2 later in the evening, there was 1 more announcement for this young chap and, it was on his last game. This time, he rolled a strike on his 8th frame, then another on his 9th frame and another on his 10th frame. Once more, the announcement of 10 consecutive strikes echoed the alley. With fingers crossed by all his friends and family, he made his 11th strike! Now it was the moment of truth, the 12th and final throw that will either win him RM1000.00 or nothing at all...maybe not nothing at all, the high game prize at least. He took a few minutes to compose and calm himself while the crowd was shushed before this decisive throw. When he released the ball, he pulled it too much and it when to the 1/2 pocket.......STRIKE!!!! The crowd went wild and he was of course, overjoyed! CONGRATULATIONS AZIEM!!! What a great start to the new year!!

In the Boys Graded category, 10 year old Mohd Rafiq Ismail from Kuala Lumpur outplayed all the older boys to come out tops after 14 games. This chubby young star has been bowling for 4 years with inspiration and guidance from his older brother Mohd Reza who was a KL bowler a few years back. Mohd Rafiq who is a southpaw is currently studying in SK Taman Bukit Indah and has represented his state to two MSSMs, bringing back gold medals each time. He was the Cari Champion CHAMPION in 2006. Tomorrow he will have to face another hurdle when he goes into battle in the Knock-Out Round. He will have to overcome 3 different bowlers to be named Selangor Leg Boys Graded Champion.

SELANGOR LEG - 1ST DAY RESULTS

Today was the 1st day of competition in the Selangor Leg. The Graded bowlers took to the lanes with the Selangor, Shah Alam and Terengganu bowlers opening their campaign in the morning.

It was then followed by the girls. Sharifah Marissa of Selangor showed the other bowlers that she was unbeatable on her training ground. She is currently leading her friend Hanan Fateha from Kuala Lumpur by 15 pins. In third position is 13 year old Ainaa Khairina from Perak.

After the top 28 Girls Graded was confirmed, it was time for the Boys Graded Squad B to try to better the Squad A bowlers so that they could make it into the Top 48 spots. Finally, after the last 3 bowlers bowled their last ball, it was confirmed that a bowler from Squad B lead the pack. Mohd Ikmal Ismail of Kuala Lumpur was a mere 3 pins in front of Muhd Hafiz Fikri who lead Squad A in the morning but even though it was a "mere" 3 pins...it was still a lead!

Here are photos of the 2 leaders; Marissa and Ikmal, with their oh so adorable sisters who also happens to be bowlers themselves.

You can download the full results of the Boys Graded and Girls Graded 1st Round from the "Downloads" Box on the left. Just click on it and it will ask you to save the file.
